True North 8/25/25

True North 8/25/25

The seas in Maine have been wild and woolly from Erin this week - spray flying, waves hammering the rocks - all played against the sapphire brilliance of an August New England sky.

Do you sense a good metaphor coming on?

I've been using some of my time away on this rugged Maine coast to ponder the creative process (yes, we've talked about that here), and to contemplate life's changes.   I found this line of imagery with which I'm rather smitten:  You'll never cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.  READ MORE

Miracle and Wonder 8/11/25

Miracle and Wonder 8/11/25

This Thursday and Friday, I drove from Virginia to Maine.  It was about the worst traffic I have ever encountered on this annual pilgrimage (which I've been making for 35 years).  Luckily I had made the decision to stop for a night with a friend in Watch Hill (it was divine - thank you Sissy!).  Watch Hill is always a smart decision.   For those who have not been, allow me to introduce you to The Ocean House - a wondrous Relais and Chateux resort set atop one of New England's most fabulous beaches.  And you just might mark your glorious getaway by picking up my custom bangle in their charming boutique.  That was a fun project.

I downloaded an audiobook for the long drive, and I wish I could claim credit for another great decision - but I somehow managed to download the wrong book.  In a stroke of divine providence - I loved my mistake.

It was Miracle and Wonder by Malcolm Gladwell.  READ MORE HERE

Fireflies 8/29/24

Fireflies 8/29/24
I'm still in Maine, where the license plates actually do read "Vacationland".  I still have another week to enjoy my beloved summer spot on this sublime coastline.  While out on my ritual morning walk earlier this week, I found myself listening extra carefully to a lovely little ballad by singer songwriter Lori McKenna, in which she melodically reminisces about catching fireflies "in mayonnaise jars with holes poked on top".  (Have a listen to her sing it here).  READ MORE

White Light 8/14/23

White Light 8/14/23
This is my morning coffee view for the next few weeks.   I am a lucky girl, and I know it.   My morning routine is a long loop walk, ending at the local store where I buy a cup of coffee and sit and admire this view.   My habit started some 30 Augusts ago, same loop but at a jog, and no sitting at the end.   Then the jogging was replaced by pushing a baby stroller.  Then a baby and a toddler stroller.  Now a walk and a sit.  A walk and a sit and a think.  READ MORE

9/13/21 - Falling into the Forest

9/13/21 - Falling into the Forest

Why I went to the woods ... unfortunately it was not to follow in the footsteps of Henry David Thoreau.  I went to the woods because a fall collection is really hard for me to design.   I don't like brown or orange or rust or gold.   I like coral and aqua and pink and lilac.   I like sitting by the ocean, or being in it or atop it.  I like the feel of the sun on my brow, and the garden getting more glorious everyday.   I get a mean case of the blues every year when summer ends.
